One does not have to be a lawyer to have a career in the legal field. In addition to becoming a lawyer, related jobs include legal secretary, paralegal and investigator. A legal secretary takes dictation or transcribes dictation from tapes and types letters, pleadings and other legal documents. A legal secretary must have a specialized knowledge of terminology applicable to legal matters. The legal secretary also answers the telephone, greets clients, maintains files and generally performs other tasks as requested by the attorney. A paralegal often assists the attorney with legal research and preparation of pleadings or other legal documents for review by the attorney. A paralegal may also assist the attorney in trial preparation and at trial itself. An investigator often interviews witnesses, locates persons and delivers (serves) legal papers to persons who are involved in lawsuits. You may explore fees and other related jobs at your local public library or by talking to your school career or guidance counselor.
