My Public Service and
Pro Bono Work

Lawyers are not required to perform free work for any person, organization or group. I believe, however, in the importance of pro bono (free) services in appropriate circumstances. The Missouri Bar encourages attorneys to perform pro bono work. The Missouri Bar recognizes appropriate pro bono work as work for clients who are unable to afford legal services, work at reduced rates for legal aid societies and work for the bar or judiciary by providing legal writing or giving seminars for the benefit of other attorneys or judges. Shawn R. McCarver performs over 50 hours of pro bono work each year, a portion of which fits in each of the above categories. Mr. McCarver serves on faculty of the Missouri Judicial College, and teaches in the area of family/juvenile law at the annual Missouri Judicial College, which is attended by all Missouri trial judges. Mr. McCarver authors books and articles, as well as supplements thereto, for the Missouri Bar and the Office of State Courts Administrator. Mr. McCarver has given educational seminars for the Missouri Bar, American Bar Association, Missouri Juvenile Justice Association and the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis. Mr. McCarver has also served on two select committees of the Missouri Supreme Court. The first was the Missouri Supreme Court committee on confidentiality of juvenile proceedings. The second is the Missouri Supreme Court permanency planning project for children. Finally, Mr. McCarver performs legal services on a pro bono basis for clients and is a panel attorney for Meramec Area Legal Aid Corporation, which provides free legal services to poor persons in civil cases.
